Ingredients
  

Cookie Base
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour Make sure to measure accurately.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Ensure butter is at room temperature.
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract Can be substituted if needed.
  • 3-4 tablespoons decorative colored sugar For topping.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until smooth.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture.
  6. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place them onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  7. Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass and sprinkle with decorative sugar.
Baking
  1. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges are golden.
  2. Let cool on wire racks before decorating.

Notes

Chill the dough for easier handling and consider using cookie cutters for fun shapes. Decorate with various themed toppings.
