Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil. Mix until well combined.
- Place the chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag. Pour half of the marinade over the chicken, seal the bag, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (preferably overnight). Keep the remaining marinade aside.
- Remove the marinated chicken from the refrigerator and allow it to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before cooking.
Cooking
- Place the chicken thighs on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
- While the chicken cooks, bring the reserved marinade to a boil in a small saucepan. Simmer for about 10 minutes until it thickens.
- Brush the cooked chicken with the thickened marinade and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
Serving
- Let the Char Siu Chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing it into pieces. Serve with rice, noodles, or in wraps.
Notes
To customize the dish, consider adding minced ginger to the marinade for extra flavor, or chili flakes for a spicy kick. The chicken can also be grilled for a smoky flavor.
