Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Whipped cream (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Mix in the milk and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined for a tender texture.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  2. Let the cake cool completely.
Assembly
  1. Once cooled, slice the cake open and layer with fresh berries and a dusting of powdered sugar, or serve with whipped cream if desired.

Notes

Consider using buttermilk for a richer flavor, and feel free to substitute different fruits or add unique toppings to personalize your shortcake.
