Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks
  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 large Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 large Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
For the Gravy
  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 large Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper until just combined.
  3. Form this mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties and set them aside to rest.
Cooking
  1. In an oven-safe skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and brown the patties for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side.
  2. Remove the browned patties and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté the sliced onions in remaining butter until they soften and become translucent.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the onions, stirring well for about 2 minutes to create a roux.
  5. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream, ensuring there are no lumps.
  6. Allow the mixture to simmer and thicken slightly for about 3 to 5 minutes.
  7. Nestle the browned patties into the gravy, cover the skillet tightly, and place it in the oven.
  8. Bake for about 45 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
Serving
  1. Remove from the oven and let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving.
